Interventional Suite

Our Interventional Suite is conveniently located at our Kansas City Office just off 71 highway on Meyer Boulevard in South Kansas City, Building 2, Suite 480, on the Research Medical Center Campus.

The nephrologists at MNC believe the comfort and well-being of our dialysis patients requiring interventional care, can be better served in an office-based procedure suite environment. With a dedicated team of Physicians, Nurses and Technicians, our patients are treated like family every step of the way with a perfect blend of current technology and decades of healthcare experience.

Established in late 2006, our Interventional Suite provides patients with a comfortable and modern setting for their access procedures. Procedures we perform in the suite consist of Fistulagrams, Angioplasties, Thrombectomies and Stenting of Access Vessels.

Fistulagram with or without balloon angioplasty:

An IV is inserted (after a local anesthesia is used) and contrast dye is injected showing your physician a “map” of your access – if a narrowing is found, a small balloon-tipped catheter is inserted and inflated, stretching open the narrowing and allowing normal blood flow. Occasionally, a stent may be placed if the balloon angioplasty alone does not completely open the narrowing.

Thrombectomy:

A Thrombectomy is performed when the dialysis access is clotted. We use a machine that breaks up and dissolves then evacuates (pulls out) the clots. This is usually followed by angioplasty to eliminate the narrowings that cause your access to clot. For these procedures, you will be given a sedative thru the IV to relax you during the procedure.

Dialysis Access Catheter Removal:

We also remove temporary and permanent dialysis catheters when patients no longer need them. This procedure is done using a local anesthetic.

What to Expect During Your Procedure Visit:

When you arrive at the suite for your procedure, you will be greeted by a member of our front desk staff for check-in. You will need to bring a friend or family member along with you to drive you home after the procedure. We have comfortable furniture, cable television, magazines and beverages to help keep your companion(s) comfortable while they wait.

After check-in, you will be prepped for your procedure by one of the members of the interventional registered nurse team. Your interventional physician will do your pre-procedure assessment and explain to you in more detail what will be happening during your procedure. A mild sedative may be given for your comfort during the procedure. Two registered nurses will be assisting your interventional physician and a radiology technician will be present to run a device called a “C-Arm” that will take pictures of your access site. This will provide the “map” your physician will use to navigate the catheters and other instruments used during the procedure.

After your procedure, you will then spend 30-45 minutes in recovery. During the entire process, you will have a staff of registered nurses who are also certified in advanced cardiac life support monitoring your entire stay. Because we are in an office suite setting, you will receive one-on-one care from check-in to check-out. The average time to plan for your procedure is approximately 2 hours from time of arrival to time of departure.

At MNC, we strive to provide the highest quality of care while performing procedures deemed necessary to maintain or enhance the patient’s dialysis treatment regimen.
